4Flush breaks down the top public picks as published by Sportsbook Spy every week during the NFL season. Our preview of Week 1 may be found here.
NFL square bettors got absolutely crushed on Sunday, the first full day of the 2014 NFL season. The public jumped all over the favorites. Only three of the 13 favorites on Sunday covered the spread. Six of the favorites that failed to cover also lost outright, creating big losses for money line bettors.
Of the seven Sunday games that had 70% or more of the tickets written on one side, only Minnesota covered. Not coincidentally, the Vikings were the only underdog on the list. Detroit is still pending. They host the New York Giants on the first half of the Monday Night Football doubleheader.
There were three money lines on Sunday that had 70% or more of the tickets written on them. All three lost. The largest was Chicago at a price of -290, which lost in overtime to Buffalo. New England lost to Miami as a 2-1 favorite.
The public bettors managed to pull a win on totals. Public totals backed 70% or more went 5-2. It is doubtful this helped much as the action on totals is significantly less than sides on most games.
To add insult to injury, bettors tried to find a bailout by taking Denver on Sunday Night Football. Denver blew a huge lead and Indianapolis managed to pull off a back door cover with a late touchdown.
Several sports reporters and sports betting experts tweeted information that suggested this was a record Sunday for books. Here is a sample:
“Best opening day we’ve ever had here” said Golden Nugget’s book director Tony Miller on win during NFL Week 1 (dogs 9-3 ATS)
— Micah Roberts (@MicahRoberts7) September 8, 2014
“We won all 10 (NFL) games in the morning slate. I don’t remember the last time that happened.” — Marc Nelson, Aliante sports book. — David Payne Purdum (@DavidPurdum) September 7, 2014
w/SNF to be decided, @JayKornegay tells me this has been the best regular season Sunday for the book in his entire career! — RJ Bell (@RJinVegas) September 8, 2014
This is how a public bettor trying to win $100 on spreads, totals and money line favorites fared on Sunday if he took every one of the heavily backed picks. This includes the -110 lay on spreads and totals as vig on losing picks.
- Spreads: -$560
- Money Line: -$665
- Totals: +$280
- Net: -$945
A player that took the other side of every one of these wagers would have won about $650, depending on the money line dog juice. We will keep a running tab of these numbers throughout the year.
Enjoy the Monday Night Football doubleheader. It is too bad that we cannot have two Monday games every week.
