Monday’s MLB schedule is highlighted by a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets, a pair of teams that had a bench-clearing incident when they met last month.
The Mets are being listed as slight home favorites with a moneyline of -120, while the Cardinals are at +100. Meanwhile, the over/under is set at right runs.
The Mets are coming off their first series loss of the season, dropping two of three to the Mariners over the weekend. Despite being just 5-5 over their last ten games, the Mets remain ten games over .500. That has allowed them to open up a 5.5-game lead atop the NL East.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are riding high after a blowout win over the Giants on Sunday night. But despite that win, the Cards have still lost five of their last eight games, losing a series to the Orioles last week. Yet, St. Louis is four games over .500 and only 2.5 games off the pace in the NL Central.
Running for Miles
Miles Mikolas will try to give the Cardinals their third straight win on Monday. Mikolas has been outstanding over his first seven starts of 2022, going 3-1 with a 1.49 ERA. That includes seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits when he faced the Mets last month.
As for the St. Louis offense, things are looking up after scoring 15 runs on Sunday. It was the second time in their last five games that the Cardinals scored double digits, although they’ve also scored three runs or less five times in their last nine games.
Before Sunday, the likes of Nolan Arenado, Tommy Edman, Dylan Carlson, and others had cooled down, leaving Paul Goldschmidt and Brendan Donovan to carry the offense.
Bullpen Gang
With Tylor Megill hitting the IL after his last start, the Mets will have reliever Trevor Williams make a spot start on Monday in what amounts to a bullpen game for them.
Williams has already started one game this year and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in his last appearance. He should be able to give the Mets a few good innings, although they will lean heavily on their bullpen in this game.
With a bullpen game, the Mets will likely have to do some damage with their bats to get a win. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor have provided plenty of power this year to lead a deep lineup.
Brandon Nimmo is also heating up, although Lindor, Eduardo Escobar, and a few others have struggled to get going lately.
Cardinals/Mets Betting Prediction
The Cardinals are in the unenviable position of having to travel and play the next day after playing the late game on Sunday night.
However, they will bring plenty of momentum to New York with them, while St. Louis has also won seven of the team’s last eight games at Citi Field.
Given that history and the fact that the Mets are relying entirely on their bullpen, the Cardinals have a ton of value as a road underdog on Monday.
