Early Season Showdown

Cliche as it may sound, much of the buzz surrounding this game is the fact that it is the first meeting between the teams since Washington won the Stanley Cup.  People from the teams are admitting that it is a factor. Coach Todd Reirden of the Capitals said this:
“We know that they’re going to be a motivated group and they’re going to have a little bit extra on the line.  Obviously, through a five-game series, you develop a little bit of hatred for certain guys so that’s always nice to get back into that sort of rivalry that we’ve developed with them now. I think it will be good for our team, especially after five days to help us get right into the game and know it’s going to be a competitive situation with a real hungry team that’s looking to knock us off.”

Whether or not past feelings prove to determine this game, they will certainly be a factor.  The Golden Knights have been struggling out of the gate this season, having scored just 5 goals in their first 3 games and allowed a whopping 10.  They have not scored a power play goal, and allow goals on a quarter of opposing teams’ power plays. Jonathon Marchessault is leading the team with 4 points with 2 goals and as many assists.

The Capitals- while only having played 2 games thus far- have not lost in regulation, picking up a win and an overtime loss.  In those two games, they have scored 13 goals, ranking 4th in the league. They have allowed seven. They have committed 13 penalties, a number they will certainly want to not build on at the same rate.

Both Teams Still in Early Season Mode

Dmitrij Jaskin is making his Capitals debut.  With the 20 game suspension of enforcer Tom Wilson, the Capitals claimed him off of waivers.  Although it seemed as if they just needed someone to plug into their fourth line until Wilson returns, J.J. Regan of Yahoo Sports seems to think that they may be “Grooming him for a bigger role.”  So, keep an eye on him. Meanwhile, Michal Kempny will be returning to the Capitals lineup after a concussion.  He is a top four defenseman and will make a big impact.

Pick and Prediction

Both of these teams have good rosters, and have enormous talent.  However, the Golden Knights have been struggling. Regardless of their potential to bounce back, it is tough to bet against a team that has been performing as well on offense as the Capitals have.  However, they will need to shore up their defense in order to avoid a repeat performance of the Pittsburgh game.  Bet on the Washington Capitals @ -140.
