On Wednesday night, the VCU Rams will travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns. VCU enters this game 6-2 with losses to Old Dominion and undefeated St. John’s. The Longhorns come into this game 5-2 with back-to-back losses to Michigan St. and Radford. Wednesday’s game will be a big one for both teams, as a win here would look good on both of their resumes.

By the Numbers
VCU is coming off an 88-59 drubbing of Iona in their last game. The Rams had four players in double figures with Marcus Evans leading the way with 19 points. VCU has played one true road game so far this year, and it was a loss to Old Dominion. The atmosphere at Old Dominion is nothing like what they will experience when they visit Texas. The crowd could be a factor here, and it will be important for this team to keep their composure if they fall behind early.
Texas is coming off two straight losses, with the most recent being a home loss to the Radford Highlanders. While Radford is a solid team, this is still a bad loss for a Longhorns team that was ranked number 17 at the time. In that game, Jericho Sims led the way with 16 points and was the only Longhorn in double figures. They had a poor shooting night, going only 22 for 63 from the field. Dylan Osetkowski dominated the boards, bringing in 17 rebounds in the game.
VCU’s defense isn’t quite as feared as it was under Shaka Smart, but they have still been a force on the defensive end, allowing only 63 points per game. The offense has been struggling though, putting up only 70 points per game. They will have a tough time against a strong Texas defense that is allowing only 69 points per game. Junior Marcus Evans has paced the Rams with 14.1 points per game, and junior Issac Vann is the only other Ram that has averaged double figures with 13.1 a game.
Texas has been very similar to the Rams so far this season. The defense has kept them in games while the offense has struggled at times, averaging 75 points a game. They will also have trouble on the offensive end against this stifling VCU defense. The Longhorns are a very young team, but so far, they have been led by the only two seniors on the team. Senior guard Kerwin Roach II is the scoring leader with 16.7 points per game. The other senior, Dylan Osetkowski, is the second leading scorer with 11.9 a game. Osetkowski is also the leading rebounder with 9.1 a game. Texas has gotten good help from Freshman Jaxson Hayes, who is averaging 10.1 points per game.
VCU vs. Texas Prediction
Texas comes in at -9. This is a big number for two teams who are very evenly matched. Defense will play a key in this game, and VCU has the better defense of the two. Radford was able to hold the Longhorns to only 59 points, and VCU should be able to keep them low as well. I think the Rams do just enough on offense to keep this game close throughout. Take VCU and the points.
