The New York Yankees, after having their Tuesday night game 1 suspended, will visit the Washington Nationals Wednesday night. The game starts at 6:05 pm central. New York is 28-12 on the year, putting them one half game ahead of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League East division. Meanwhile, Washington is 24-18, good enough for third place in the tough National League East.
However, Washington is only a game and a half behind the first place Atlanta Braves, so a win could potentially help their status immensely. C.C. Sabathia will get the starting nod for New York, while Max Scherzer will take the rubber for Washington. Sabathia owns a 2-0 record on the year, and has a very good 2.23 ERA. Not to be outdone, Scherzer leads the league in wins with a 7-1 record thus far. He also has the fourth lowest ERA: at 1.69. Washington is favored in this game: at -180.

New York
New York’s stats look radically different than they did earlier in the season. These hitting stats look so different primarily due to the change in the game of one man: Didi Gregorious. Gregorious had a ridiculously hot start, but now finds himself, in terms of batting average, down next to strikeout king Giancarlo Stanton. Gregorious has dropped from the consistent .370s to now batting just .260.
Highly touted rookie Gleybar Torres now leads New York at .324 in his 20 games thus far. Torres has also driven in 12 while slugging 3 home runs.
Regardless of all the hitting statistics, this game has pitchers’ duel written all over it. Just looking at the pitchers’ stats shows that. C.C. Sabathia hasn’t lost a game yet this year, and he will look to build on his strong start.
Washington Nationals
If you thought Sabathia’s stats were impressive, Nationals’ starter Max Scherzer will blow you away. Combined with leading the league in wins and having a sub-2 ERA as mentioned before, he has also struck out 91, 5 more than anyone else. He is also in the top 5 in WHIP and opponents’ batting average. He also has a complete game under his sleeve. Needless to say, he can take over any given game and, this year, it has been almost every time he takes the field.
At the plate, Howie Kendrick leads the way, batting .302. He also has 12 RBIs with 4 home runs. With both teams being good, but not great, at the plate, I see a pitchers’ duel that will be fun to watch.
Nationals top Yankees
After 1, 2, or even 3 wins, one could label ridiculous stats as a string of flukes dotted with sloppy outings resulting in losses and no-decisions. However, this just hasn’t been the case for Max Scherzer. After 7 wins and only one loss, it’s pretty safe to say he’s one of the best in the game. It’s extremely hard to bet against a pitcher having this good of a year, and I wouldn’t start now. Take the favored Nationals: at -180.
