The 2019 Women’s World Cup is down to just three teams remaining, and that number will be trimmed to two on Wednesday. The team from Sweden will meet up with the Netherlands for the right to take on the United States in the final on Sunday. This is a rematch of the 2017 European Championship game that was won by the Netherlands.
The Netherlands comes into this game with a perfect record in World Cup play, and they have been pretty dominant. The Dutch defeated Italy by a score of 2-0 in the quarterfinals and dominated time of possession in that match. Sweden suffered a 2-0 loss to the United States in the group stage but has been sharp in the knockout round. The Swedes came from behind to knock off Germany by a 2-1 score in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands is a +125 favorite in this game while Sweden checks in at +245.
Sweden Has Plenty of Scoring Depth
Scoring just two goals per game might not seem like a lot, but the team from Sweden has proven that it is. There have been eight different players who have tallied a goal for Sweden, and they have the ability to score from all over the field. Sweden has gone 10-6-5 against the Netherlands all-time, and that should give them plenty of confidence heading into this game. There likely won’t be a ton of goals scored in this matchup, but Sweden can strike at any time.
Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius both have a pair of goals to lead Sweden, but they don’t necessarily have to score for this team to be successful. Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl has been relatively sharp so far in this tournament, but she hasn’t really been challenged. Lindahl has allowed just four goals but has only made 11 saves.
Netherlands Has Terrific Set-Pieces
The Netherlands might not have as much scoring depth as the team from Sweden, but they do have a bigger star. Forward Vivianne Miedema leads the Dutch team with a trio of goals so far in the World Cup tournament, and she will have the attention of the Swedish team. The Netherlands will likely use the help of set-pieces to set up scoring opportunities for their star.
Midfielder Sherida Spitse has four assists so far in this tournament, and most of them have come off of set plays for the Dutch. The Netherlands has also done a great job of dominating time of possession, which has helped out their goalkeeper. Sari van Veenendaal has only allowed three goals while making 10 saves.
Sweden to Face Team USA in Final
The team from Sweden will be out for revenge in this game, and that should concern the team from the Netherlands. The Dutch have been mighty impressive throughout their World Cup run, but this is a whole different level. Sweden gave the United States Women’s National Team all they could handle earlier in this tournament, and they are going to set up a rematch in the title game. Bet Sweden +245 to eliminate the Netherlands and advance to the World Cup final.
