The moment everyone has been waiting for has arrived, the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event kicked off on July 5th with a $10,000 buy-in and no limit hold’em format. The event will have three starting days and players have flooded the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino to either take part or watch as the action unfolds.
The Main Event is the most anticipated event of the series and for the first time in the history of the event, $10,000,000 is guaranteed as a first place prize. To begin, players are given 30,000 in chips and these chips are important as this event has no re-entries.
Poker pro and 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion, Joe Hachem, opened up the event with the ‘shuffle up and deal’, stating it was an honor and privilege to be a world champion of the WSOP and represent the game. During the event, the ESPN Feature table is the highlight, with fans and players able to watch as top players compete. When the tournament began, Greg Merson and Ryan Riess were seated at the table, making for nice action as the tournament got started.
Several big name players were found to be seated at the tables during the opening flight including Johnny Chan, Tom McEvoy, Mike Matusow, Annette Obrestad and Antonio Esfandiari. Unfortunately, Doyle Brunson was missing from the event and had taken to Twitter to announce he would not compete this year. The legendary pro was not going to compete last year but did, earning a 408th finish. This year, Brunson stated that he is not playing as the hours are ‘just too damn long’ with a hashtag of #oldpokerplayersneverdietheyjustfadeaway.
The tournament is currently on day 1C and will continue tomorrow with Day 2A and 2B, then be followed by 2C. On the 10th, day 3 will begin and by the 14th of July, the final table should be set. Those who make the final table will then wait until November to see who will be the 2014 WSOP Main Event champion.
