The WSOP Main Event’s final table was just decided about 30 minutes ago after a grueling day at the Rio. 27 players started the day, with the tournament going non-stop until there was only nine players remaining. In the end, 2001 Main Event champion Carlos Mortensen would end up going out in 10th place and just finishing on the bubble for the “November Nine” final table.
As of the time of this reporting, JC Tran will headline a tough group of players who collectively have several WSOP bracelets between them, as well as numerous WPT titles and millions and millions in lifetime tournament winnings.
It was also Tran who knocked out aforementioned poker legend Carlos Mortensen on the final hand of the night, where he ended up turning a straight and was leaving Carlos drawing dead to a club on 5th street. When the flush never came to fruition on the river, it was Tran breathing a sigh of relief and eventually realizing he had ended the evening with $38 million in chips and was the chip leader among the final 9.
Other notable players still in the hunt for the $8.3 million dollar 1st-place prize is former WPT champion Mark Newhouse and WSOP gold bracelet winner Amir Lehavot. The clear headliner is JC Tran though, who has has 2 gold bracelets to his name and even a PokerStars WCOOP Main Event title to his name.
Tran will go into the 4-month break with 8 million more chips than his 2nd closest competitor and will most likely be the bettor’s choice to take it down, with long shot odds going to Mark Newhouse, who has shown signs of tournament greatness over the years on the circuit.
