The Phil Ivey Saga Continues — Borgata Makes a Move

Phil Ivey successfully managed to obtain a six-figure score in an event in 2019 World Series of Poker. Although he may not consider that too big of a success. He has had much bigger scores in his history of playing not only poker but also other casino games such as baccarat and blackjack. However, he had been participating in an ongoing court saga with Borgata casino where he used an illegal technique known as edge-sorting to gain an advantage.

The Borgata casino did not perceive his actions as legal and filed a suit which has been ongoing. Ivey used all his legal firepower, and the casino used all their legal firepower in order to win the case; however, no final result has been declared so far.

It seems that the casino is now pressing Phil Ivey. It managed to seize his earnings from the 2019 World Series of Poker as a part of the payment that they believe Ivey owns to them. They collected a total of $124,410, according to this article.

Ivey’s PPC Run

The money that Ivey managed to earn in WSOP was from the $50,000 Poker Players Championship. He was a chip leader for most of the event but eventually failed to claim the first prize. He ended up in the eighth position and won a substantial amount of money — all of which was seized by Borgata.

As soon as he won the money, the casino’s lawyers were prepared to serve notice to the organizers of The World Series of Poker. They were cleared to seize all assets in Nevada owned by Ivey, and the money he earned in the PPC tournament were legally in Nevada.

At the moment his earnings were snatched, it wasn’t clear whether Ivey managed to retain anything from his paycheck. However, according to Flushdraw, he did not get anything from his WSOP earnings. In other words, Borgata managed to take all the money successfully.

At the time his money was taken from him Ivey continued to play poker and even took part in the Main Event. However, it was visible that he wasn’t feeling happy, and he busted early. He was likely aware that it doesn’t pay off for him to have a deep run. In other words, if he had won some money in the Main Event, Borgata would have probably snatched that from him.

The entire saga continues, as Ivey still tries to fight the casino legally. Both sides have enormous legal budgets that they are ready to invest in their lawyers in order to win in the case. At the moment, Borgata thinks that Ivey owns them approximately $10 million which he won by using edge-sorting in baccarat. It’s going to be interesting to see how the whole thing would unveil in the end in this legally twisted case that has been going on for quite a while.
