Tournament of Champions Kicks Off WSOP Action

World Series of Poker officials are always looking for new ways to make each annual event more exciting, and they came up with a great tournament this year. The 2024 World Series of Poker kicked off with a Tournament of Champions, although the top finishers in this event were not big names.

Players that won a bracelet over the past year were given a freeroll into this event, and there were over 1,000 different players invited. Less than 60% of those players decided to bother to enter into the tournament, and there weren’t many big names compared to what could have been.

Dong Meng took home the top price in this tournament, and he walked away with $200,000. While that was not a huge payout compared to what will be handed out throughout this tournament, it will allow Meng to use that money to enter more events.

There were three full days of action at the Tournament of Champions, and the chip lead did end up changing hands a ton throughout the three days. Even though this event was by invitation only, that’s not the case with most of the tournaments that are available throughout the WSOP.

The WSOP will also feature some great online events, but the best poker action is going to be found in-person at Las Vegas casinos

Final Table Results

All of the players at the final table have had success at the WSOP over the last 12 months, but this table was without many of the biggest names in the sport. Dong Meng went home with $200,000 more than what he entered with, and that should influence his decisions later on at the WSOP.

Kevin Will finished in second place at this tournament, and that allowed him to take home $120,000. Those were the only two players to win at least six digits as the payouts started to get much smaller from there.

Nathan Wasson finished in third place in this tournament as he took in $87,000, and it was Richard Gebhart that cashed in with $63,000. Those two players had an epic hand at one point in this tournament, and that set where each player finished.

The top 100 players all received some sort of payout in this event, and all of those players won more than they had to buy-in.

More Exciting Events

The WSOP always delivers some exciting events every single year, and this was just one example of some of the big changes coming to the sport. There are only a couple of other invite-only tournaments out there, including one that is just for employees.

Some of the biggest names in the sport have already entered into some tournaments, and that includes Daniel Negreanu. He is trying to end a long drought without a win at the WSOP, but his first attempt to end that skid has already ended.

Things are really going to start to heat up in the month of June as that is when the online events will be taking place as well.
